Who is my pension beneficiary?

Logistics

Your beneficiary, the person you choose to receive your pension death benefit, plays a crucial role in your pension plan. Under pension legislation:

  • If you have a spouse, your spouse is automatically your pension beneficiary unless the spouse has waived their entitlement in writing on the prescribed form.
  • If you wish to name a pension beneficiary other than your spouse, your spouse must complete the prescribed waiver form from the Office of the Superintendent – Pension Commission, Manitoba.
  • If you do not have a spouse, or your spouse has waived their entitlement, the pension beneficiary you have named on your MSBA Beneficiary Designation Change form will receive your pension death benefit.
  • If you do not have a spouse and have not named a pension beneficiary, your pension death benefit will be paid to your Estate.

Ellement or the MSBA Pension Plan does not verify or assume any responsibility for the validity of your beneficiary designation(s).

If necessary, please contact Ellement for the applicable form(s) to update your beneficiary designation, marital status, or family situation. You must make these changes in writing on the applicable form(s).

Note: If you name someone under 18 as your pension beneficiary, you must also name an adult trustee to receive payment on behalf of the underaged pension beneficiary.
